Fiji loses to Argentina, faces Aust in quarters

Fiji has topped Pool B of the Vancouver 7s  despite going down 26-24 against Argentina in its last match today.

The Gareth Baber coached side opened the scoring through playmaker Vatemo Ravouvou in the first minute to lead 5-0.

Renzo Babier leveled scores for Argentina a minute later as the Fijians fumbled the restart. The kick was converted and this gave Argentina a 7-5 lead.

Kalione Nasoko raced away to score Fiji’s second try after getting a beautiful inside pass from Masivesi Dakuwaqa.

Captain Osea Kolinisau dotted down their third try after Nasoko stole the ball from a breakdown and raced away to the try-line.

Fiji led 19-7 at halftime.

Argentina hit back with a converted try straight after the break to keep the pressure on the Fijians.

Former World Sevens Player of the Year Samisoni Viriviri showed his brilliance and class as he collected the ball from a Fijian scrum inside his own 22 metre line and raced away all the way to the try-line untouched, extending Fiji’s lead by 24-12.

Franco Sabato rallied Argentina back in the game with a brilliant try and a converted try in the dying moments of the match sealed the famous win for the Pumas- their first win over the Fijians since 2012.

With the result, Argentina sneaks into the last eight where they will face the United States of America (USA) while Fiji will play Australia.
