Replacements save Fiji against Samoa

Replacements Setareki Bituniyata and Waisea Nacuqu were the stars for Fiji as the Osea Kolinisau captained side overcame Samoa 19-12 in their second match at the Vancouver 7s today.

Bituniyata scored the winning try for the Fijians on one end while nippy Nacuqu made a try-saving tackle on Samoa’s Paul Perez on the other by pushing the attacker to the touch line, right at the stroke of fulltime to hand Fiji its second straight win in the tournament and book its spot in the quarterfinals.

Samoa was first to get on the score-board through Samoa Toloa but a mistake towards the end of the half where the ball was passed into the hands of Fiji’s Mesulame Kunavula saw Kolinisau dotting down in the corner as the teams rested 5-5 at halftime.

Fiji started the second half well and Nacuqu beautifully set up Kalione Nasoko to score his third try in Vancouver and extend Fiji’s lead by 12-5.

Samoan Captain Tila Mealoi leveled the scores with less than a minute and half to go.

Fiji staged its attack and the forward pack managed to combine well and set up Bituniyata.

The Samoans did not give up and went attacking with Nacuqu proving to be Fiji’s savior with his superb tackle on Perez right at the stroke of fulltime.

Fiji plays Argentina in its last pool match at 1.58pm.
