Warriors register hard fought win

Defending champion, the TFL Fiji Warriors registered a hard fought 38-30 victory over Tonga A in their opening clash of the 2017 World Rugby Pacific Challenge in Suva tonight.

The Senirusi Seruvakula coached side displayed an impressive performance in the first half and scored four unanswered tries through Captain Mosese Voka, halfback Serupepeli Vularika, inside centre Eroni Vasiteri and winger Lepani Raiyala to lead 26-9 at halftime.

Fly-half James Faiva scored all of Tonga’s first half points through penalties.

Winger John Stewart further extended the Warriors lead with a try in the corner straight after the break.

A yellow card to replacement forward Kalivati Tawake and heavy Laucala downpour worked in favour of Tonga A as they rallied a comeback and scored three tries to tie the game up.

Captain Sione Lolohea led the charge and touched down twice while replacement Tuikakavalu Ika’s try and a successful conversion by Faiva saw the host lead by a single point- 31-30.

The score-line made the final minutes of the match exciting and the champions were able to pull the win out of the fire with Raiyala dotting down in the corner and Jonetani Ralulu successfully converting the try.

The Fiji Warriors will play Junior Japan in their next match at 5.30pm on Tuesday while Samoa A will face Tonga A on the same day at 3pm.
