Fiji to play in Brisbane Global 10s

Fiji will participate in the 2018 edition of the Brisbane Golden Rugby 10s tournament in February next year.

Confirming this, Fiji Rugby Union Chief Executive John O’Connor said the inclusion of Fiji is another great achievement and milestone for the FRU and the sport of rugby in the country.

“Our inclusion comes after negotiations between FRU led by the Chairman of the Board and Duco Events. We are delighted at this great opportunity.”

“The Board has been committed to creating pathways for our local players and our inclusion gives our local players yet another opportunity to be exposed to international competition especially after our inclusion in the NRC competition.”

Mr O’Connor, thanked the Board for their foresightedness and the drive to ensure that our local players were given such opportunities to international tournament so that they are able to compete for positions in the Flying Fijians.

“Our local players will be playing against Super Rugby teams and this will indeed expose them to a high level of competition. The opportunity will also expose our local our coaches and technical staff to the vigorous requirements of international competitions”, Mr O’Connor highlighted.

Mr O’Connor confirmed that they will commence to source a name and a sponsor for the Fijian outfit.

The Brisbane Global Tens Competition will feature five Australian and five New Zealand Super Rugby teams with four other teams from around the world to be invited each year.

The 2018 competition sees Fiji making up the fourth invited team joining Samoa, French giants Pau and Japan’s Panasonic Wild Knights.

Following a hugely popular debut this year, the event switches to a day-night format, with matches to begin in the afternoon and run into the evenings.

This year, the tournament was won by the Chiefs who defeated the Crusaders 12-7 in the final.

The 2018 Brisbane Global Rugby Tens Competition will be held at the Suncorp Stadium on the 9 and 10th of February 2018.
