Lautoka beats Suva, wins VPL

Lautoka won the 2017 Vodafone Premier League title at Churchill Park today after beating Suva 2-1 in a thrilling match.

The Blues just needed a draw in the fixture to win the title but a gallant display by Suva took things to the wire.

Impressive midfielder Siotame Kubu broke the deadlock for the hosts in the 39th minute after a defensive mistake by the Suva defence gave him the opportunity to sneak in and place the ball beyond the reach of goalkeeper Tevita Koroi.

Suva came out strongly in the second half and received a penalty after Kolinio Sivoki used his hand to clear an attempt by Shahil Dave.

Kelvin Naidu beautifully placed his attempt into the back of the net to level scores and make the remainder of the match more interesting and exciting.

Setareki Hughes was denied on two occasions by Lautoka goalie Benaminio Mateinaqara while Suva stopper Koroi also made a number of daring saves.

Replacement defender Jone Vesikula headed Lautoka’s winner in the 85th minute from a Valerio Nawatu corner to seal the win, and more importantly the title.

Lautoka last won the National League title in 2009.
