Army wins Sukuna Bowl

Army wrestled the prestigious Ratu Sukuna Bowl from Police after registering an impressive 19-12 victory in a thrilling encounter at the ANZ Stadium in Suva today.

Police made some basic handling errors early in the match and allowed Army to get the first try of the match through Usamaki Jitoko in the 7th minute.

Fly-half Jeke Suguturaga slotted in a penalty to extend their lead by 8-0 a couple of minutes later.

Police hit back with a try to former Fiji 7s star Mitieli Nacagilevu and a successful conversion by Jonetani Ralulu narrowed the gap to only a single point.

Nacagilevu was sent to the sin-bin for a dangerous tackle on Army Captain Isake Katonibau.

With an extra man on the field, Army applied the pressure and an intercept from Jiuta Takubu resulted in their second try of the challenge which was dotted down by Daveta Koroitakali.

Army went to the break with a 13-7 halftime lead.

Nacagilevu scored his and Police’s second try after the break to again narrow the gap to one point but two late penalties by Emosi Mulevoro sealed victory for Army.

Army also won the Oldies and Development grades earlier in the day.

In the Oldies division they defeated Police 20-17 and in the Development division they overcame Police 20-15.

Army also won the Rugby League clash 20-18.
