Hayne equals record in Fiji Bati win

Jarryd Hayne was instrumental in Fiji Bati’s 58-12 triumph over the United States of America in their Rugby League World Cup opener in Townsville last night and created a slice of history for himself as well.

Hayne’s 46th minute try in the big win took his try scoring tally in three World Cups with Fiji and Australia to 13, equaling the record held by the legendary Bob Fulton since 1975.

His 13 tries include 9 for the Kangaroos and 4 for the Vodafone Fiji Bati.

Captain Kevin Naiqama, winger Suliasi Vunivalu and centre Taane Milne each scored two tries, while secondrower Viliame Kikau, centre Akuila Uate, prop Kane Evans and halfback Henry Raiwalui also got on the score-sheet in the impressive display.

The Fijians suffered a major blow in the 18th minute as Evans broke his wrist while crashing over to score a try.

The injury rules him out of the tournament and he joins Korbin Sims- reducing the Fijian squad to only 19 players.

Fiji led 38-6 at halftime and continued its dominance in the second half.

Fiji will face Wales in its match at 9.30pm next Sunday.
