Estonia beats Fiji in friendly international

Estonia defeated Fiji 2-0 in their friendly international match at the ANZ Stadium in Suva today.

Fijian Coach Christophe Gamel handed goalkeeper Epeli Loaniceva his first international debut and fielded Zibraaz Sahib, Saula Waqa and Narendra Rao in his starting line-up.

The Europeans who are rated 80th in the FIFA World Ranking started strongly and went up in the 13th minute through veteran striker Henri Anier.

Waqa missed two good chances of equalizing towards the end of the half as the goalkeeper was beaten on both occasions but the final attempts failed to find the target.

Estonia led 1-0 at halftime and continued with its dominance in the second half despite some good buildups and attacking play by the Fijians.

Gamel introduced Ame Votoniu, Samuela Nabenia, Napolioni Qasevakatini, Rusiate Matarerega and Amani Makoe after the restart and couple of counter-attack moves from the hosts almost got them the equalizer in the second half but superiority and experience in the Estonian defence allowed them to hold on and replacement striker Martin Miller sealed the win for the visitors with a beautiful finish in additional time.

Estonia will play Vanuatu and New Caledonia in two more friendly matches next week while the Fijians will shift their focus to the Mini Pacific Games In Vanuatu which will played from December 4-15.
