Gamel calls for support, remains positive

Vodafone Fiji national team head coach Christophe Gamel is calling on fans to come out in numbers and support the Bula Boys against 80th ranked Estonia on Sunday in Suva.

The Frenchman said despite a huge gap between the two nations in terms of rankings, his brigade will be out to give it’s very best and he remains positive about their chances.

Fiji is currently ranked 175th and held 165th placed Indonesia in Jakarta in its last friendly international in September.

“We have to face them with pride and show that Fiji soccer is improving,” he said.

“It’s not a problem if we lose. We should continue to play with consistency, and put in hard work against a hard team.”

“I hope that the people come with a positive mind-set to support the team.”

“The key point of this game will be the transition; offensive and defensive.

“When we lose the ball, we will have to be really fast to reorganize ourselves otherwise it will become a mess because Estonia is very fast in the offensive transition.

“Physically we are good but tactically we are not responding well and against Estonia, you can’t make so many mistakes, otherwise you will be crashed.”

Gamel said the rainy Suva weather would favour the visitors as they are very much used to playing in wet conditions.

“If it rains, it will be one point more against us because Estonia is very much used to playing in these conditions. We need to control play if it rains during the game. The rebound of the ball and the pace of the passes will be faster and this can be a negative point for us.”

Gamel will announce his match day squad for the international friendly on Friday.

Ba’s Remueru Tekiate and Labasa’s Amani Makoe are in the running to skipper the side.

The Fiji vs Estonia match kicks off at 3pm at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.
