Gamel recalls Waqa, Matarerega

Vodafone Fiji national Coach Christophe Gamel has recalled Ba’s Saula Waqa and Nadi marksman Rusiate Matarerega as preparation for the international friendly match against Estonia intensifies.

The pair was suspended for three matches and fined $300 each by Fiji Football Association’s Disciplinary Committee after they failed to report to the national camp for their tour of Indonesia in September.

The suspension ruled both of them out of pool play in last month’s Courts IDC.

Gamel said he had to recall the two players as some players in the squad he selected after the IDC failed to impress him and did not give him a positive feedback during the training sessions.

He said he had to add few more players to the squad last week as he felt there was not much quality.

“I continue to trust my Bula Boys, they have pride and will surely answer during the game against Estonia,” he said.

“They (Estonian players) are all professionals, they play fast and will give us a lot of trouble but it will be interesting to see how we face these kinds of players.”

“Regardless of the result we register against Estonia, I will be happy because I know my players will give their best.”

Gamel added that preparations will get more intense from next week as he will work on the team formation and combinations to counter the European opponents.

Meanwhile the national team defeated Lautoka 1-0 in a friendly match yesterday at Churchill Park.

Striker Samuela Nabenia scored the lone goal for Fiji while Samuela Drudru’s penalty and rebound effort was saved by national team goalkeeper Epeli Loaniceva.

Fiji will host Estonia at the ANZ Stadium in Suva next Sunday.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 3pm.
