Tuwai leads Fijiís Oceania 7s campaign

Playmaker Jerry Tuwai will lead defending champion and host Fiji in the 2017 Oceania 7s Championship in Suva this week.

Tuwai who has been nominated for World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year award says he is honoured to lead the team on their home soil.

“I am truly honoured and thank the Lord Almighty for this opportunity. I have a huge responsibility and know how difficult it will be for us to play on our home soil and defend our title.”

“I have a lot of faith in my teammates and know they will give their best for the country and their families this weekend. I just want to urges all Fijians to support this team in every way possible.”

The Buca native from Bua says he has learned a lot about leadership from former Captain Osea Kolinisau and is ready to step into his shoes.

“I have played under Oscar (Kolinisau) for some time and have learned a lot from him. He was a great leader and I will try my best to keep my teammates focused and determined,” he added.

Tuwai will be assisted by lanky forward Apisai Domolailai and playmaker Vatemo Ravovou.

The Fiji Airways Fiji 7s team will open its campaign against New Caledonia at 4.40pm on Friday before facing American Samoa in its second pool match at 7.40pm.
