Turagalailai puts Rewa in BOG final

Centre-back Inoke Turagalailai scored the decisive penalty as Rewa overcame Ba 8-7 to book its place in the final of the 2020 Punjas Battle of the Giants at Churchill Park in Lautoka on Saturday.

The first semifinal got underway on a fast pace and Samuela Drudru threatened with some early shots and tested Simione Tamanisau.

Rewa Captain Setareki Hughes, his brother Bruce and youngster Josaia Sela missed a couple of good sitters for the Delta Tigers before finally breaking the deadlock in the 33th minute.

Midfielder Patrick Joseph neatly set up Sela who sliced his way past three defenders and found the back of the net.

The 18-year-old was fouled in the progress by goalkeeper Isikeli Sevanaia and was stretchered off the park and replaced by Mohammed Ramzan Khan.

Captain Hughes extended Rewa’s lead a few minutes later which an excellent finish.

Rewa led 2-0 at halftime but the Men in Black came out strongly after the break and a 68th minute goal by Narendra Rao made things exciting.

Hardworking striker Abbu Zahid leveled scores in injury time to push the match into extra time.

Ba was reduced to ten players after Manasa Nawakula received his second yellow card for foul play.

With no goals scored in the 30 minutes of extra time, the winner had to be decided via a penalty shoot-out.

Goalkeepers Tamanisau and Sevanaia starred in the shoot-out; saving three shots each while Jonetani Newa’s attempt came off the cross-bar.

Sumeet Goundar, Kalaveti Sivoi, Ilimotama Jese, Mohammed Mobeen and Abbu Zahid were successful with their attempts while Tamanisau saved Balbir Singh Jnr, Malakai Tiwa and Mitieli Naiviro’s shots.

Gabriel Matanisiga, Anish Khem, Patrick Joseph, Kavaia Rawaqa, Mohammed Naizal and Turagalailai scored for Rewa while Seva saved Misaele Draunibaka, Peniame Drova and Mohammed Ramzan’s shots.
