Central Brothers aim to play in main grade

The Central Brothers Babas are aiming to play in the main competition of local tournaments.

The Munesh Goundar captained side defeated the Barbarians 21-5 in an exhibition match of the 45th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s at the ANZ Stadium in Suva yesterday.

The 31-year-old said they played at the Nawaka 7s and won it twice in 2020 and 2021 but this was their first appearance in Marist 7s.

“We just want to showcase that the sport of 7s is for everyone and it doesn’t matter where you are from and what your religion is."

“This is our first tournament as Central Brothers but I have played for other teams as well. We are going to build on this win and play in other domestic tournaments where they have a category for Fellow Fijians."

“The main goal is to come into the main roster and play with the top teams. We have been playing for a long time and some of our brothers play in Ruby League while others play in the Koroturaga sevens so we are trying to attract players to come in and develop the team.”

Goundar, who is a  Physiotherapist by profession also mentioned that they are looking for assistance in terms of coaching as they have been playing without a coach in the last two years.

“We want to build ourselves and skills first then we would like to take part in other domestic tournaments. For now, I think Marist sevens has boosted the confidence of the boys and we would love to seek some advice from the national coach and Fiji Rugby Union to grow our game further," he added.
