$10m Budget for Drua's campaign

The Fiji Rugby Union has a set an annual budget of NZD $10 million for Fijian Drua's participation in Super Rugby.

FRU chief executive John O’Connor said they will only receive the funding from World Rugby if the Fijian Drua is confirmed in the Super Rugby 2022.

According to O’Connor, New Zealand Rugby and World Rugby are very supportive and will fund NZ $8 million (A $ 7.3 million) to NZ $10 million (A $ 9.2 million) to cover on-going costs.

“We have not received that funding. It’s a commitment that is given and the funding will only be released if we are successfully included in the Super Rugby competition next year. We are still working hard because a lot of work needs to be done. At the moment our position has not been confirmed and if we are confirmed and announced that we have a team then World Rugby funding will trigger.”

“We have already done the budget for the Fijian Drua and it’s about $10 million NZ a year. We have gone to the market and are seeking private investors to buy shares in the company. We are still negotiating on the Drua which is another process we are going through.”

"The first process to complete is the creation of a new company and having private investors investing in the team. So that’s the focus at the moment and we need to fulfil that in order to fulfil the requirement by New Zealand rugby. We haven’t started working on the sponsor of the Fijian Drua.”
