Coke Games torch relay launched

The 2021 Coca-Cola Games torch was officially lit at the Coca Cola Amatil in Laucala Beach today.

Athletes from Ratu Kadavulevu School, the defending champions of the 2019 Boys Division lit the torch which will tour around the country before resting at the ANZ Stadium during the Games which will be held from 22-24 April.

The organisers have also secured $10, 000 sponsorship from Pacific Energy whereby $8,000 will go towards fuel expenses and the remaining $2000 will be given to winning schools.

Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics President Vuli Waqa said they are expecting tough competition as the Games were not held last year due to COVID-19.

“I want to tell everybody else that yes, we are ready and back this year. Despite COVID-19 and the tropical Cyclones, we are expecting a very big competition at the stadium this year. We are expecting some new records after seeing the inter-house and zonal meets this year.”

“My message to the athletes is to train really hard because only two weeks is left and make sure to look after yourselves and health also. Come the day of the competition, we want to see the athletes fully focused and give their level best.”

Coca-Cola Amatil Marketing Manager Lawrence Tikaram said  they will be marking14 years of torch relay and the Games will be dedicated to front-line workers.

“This year is symbolic in the sense that it will be the 14th year for the Torch Relay except for last year. Because it’s an Olympic year-what it does symbolises is the true spirit of unity and diversity that we have amongst us.”

“We want to be a beacon for home for Fiji and also the entire world during the COVID contained times. It sends a strong message in the world of how resilient we Fijians are to be able to come together to provide and promote one of the biggest games ever in the world.”
