Kolinisau unhappy over Sevu's termination

Fiji's Olympic gold medal winning Captain Osea Kolinisau has expressed his disappointment over the termination of Sevuloni Mocenacagi's contract and has urged people stop playing the lanky forward for Fiji's losses in the recent past.

Kolinisau in a social media post said it  is wrong to blame Mocenacagi for the defeats as 7s is a team sport.

"This is a team sport and you win and lose as a team. He got red carded in the final in Vegas against South Africa because he was trying to get the ball back in the last play and it wasn’t intentional, it was just unlucky., if Sevu didn’t get the red card we still would have lost because it was just last play anyways!!!.”

Kolinisau also went onto say that throwing Mocenacagi’s contract out of the door was an unfair decision made by Coach Gareth Baber.

He also revealed that discipline was always an issue for Fiji and questioned about the current team's consistency when it came to discipline and cards.

“I’m sad to see that the Coach threw him under the bus after what he did instead of having his back. Yes what he did was wrong and he knows it but to read it In the papers that the Coach terminates his contract and drops him from the team- that's the Coach blaming the player.”

"We had a lot of discipline issues and cards before Ben Ryan started but when he came in he addressed that issue of discipline and consistency and 3 years Fiji was the best discipline and consistent team in the series and Sevu Mocenacagi was part of that.

"So I ask the question why we have lost our way and gone back to having cards and inconsistency??? I was around when Sevu Mocenacagi was brought in the squad and saw him develop as a person and a player and he hardly had discipline issues! I think Sevu Mocenacagi is one of the best forward in the world sevens series currently and best," he added.

Meanwhile Fiji Rugby chief executive John O'Connor when contacted for a comment said he is not a techical person to comment about 7s players getting cards in tournaments.

He said Coach Baber is aware of the situation and doing his work and he would be the best person to make a comment.

Baber could not be reached for a comment when this story was published.
