Koroibete wins Players’ award

Fijian winger and Melbourne Rebels flyer Marika Koroibete has been named Players' Player at the club's presentation night in Sydney.

Koroibete produced an incredible season for the club despite a try-less run to start the year, leading the Rebels in carries, metres, clean breaks and defenders beaten.

He would break his drought against the Highlanders in Round Three of Super Rugby Trans-Tasman, going into second place in the club's all-time leading try-scorer list with 69.

“It’s a huge honour to receive this award and something that means a great deal to me and my family,” said Koroibete in a statement.

“I want to thank all my teammates and our coaching staff for their support every day and helping me become the player I am today.”

“It’s been a tough year, but I’m so grateful for my teammates - we always go out there and just fight together.”

“I’m so excited to see our young talent come up in the next couple of years and believe there are big things ahead.”

Meanwhile, vice-captain Michael Wells was recognised for his leadership and contribution both on and off the field with the Spirit of Weary Dunlop award.

Wells and Koroibete were joined in the Wallabies squad by Andrew Kellaway, Rob Leota, Pone Fa’amausili, Matt To’omua, Reece Hodge and Isi Naisarani.
