Domestic competition is key: Tuivuaka

Tokyo Olympics Gold medalist and Robust Fiji 7s forwards Asaeli Tuivuaka believes that young rugby players should take advantage of domestic competitions.

Tuivuaka says more domestic competitions will guide the young ones and build them locally.

The ‘Tank’ reflected on last year’s and earlier this year’s competitions which helped players like Iosefo Masi and Sireli Maqala grow and book a spot at Tokyo Olympics.

“More competitions means more time for the young and upcoming players to form themselves. The competitions will guide them in the right direction while the experienced players will show them the right path.”

“It’s all about starting from the local competitions and improving in each tournament. Game by game improvement is necessary but for starters, I think they should always go back to the tournament and see their performance.”

“Players like Masi and Maqala came from the local competitions where they gave a tremendous performance and their hard work saw them at Olympics. It’s all about how the young ones approach a game and the things they take back from a tournament.”

“At times we see that some players play in one or two local competitions and that’s the end for them. They fear losing and once they lose, they don’t return. My advice to the upcoming and young players is that you can’t build a castle in one day. It takes years and hard work. I just want to tell them to stay determined and work on the weak areas to attain the national jumper one day,” Tuivuaka added.
