I don't hide things from players: Baber

Fiji 7s Coach Gareth Baber says he never hides anything from the players because he believes in creating honesty and authenticity in the team.

Speaking to Fiji Rugby media from his home in Wales, Baber also revealed that he told the team about former Captain Paula Dranisinikula exploring other options and Jerry Tuwai receiving international offers.

“I was there, I was gutted and losing my Captain Paula Dranisinikula at that stage- he was the guy I had seen taking us to the Olympics. And at that stage Kalione Nasoko was not back in the team either.”

“When I looked at that group- Kalione Nasoko with a knee injury and Paula leaving. Even at that stage Jerry had been offered a lovely contract in the US and I spoke to him also.”

“I thought at that stage if I lose those three- I’ll have to try and re-invent the team again. Bringing in new players and developing them would not have been easy because we also needed players who could understand our system and your culture and keep that strong”

“But the push for Kalione to the Olympics drove him to get into the best fitness level and to get over his injury. I was also very pleased with him not because he played over for the past months but what he brought for the team is what we had in 29018 and 2019,” he said.

Baber highlighted the honesty shown from the three players created a positive impact on the other players in the team.
