Tonga and Samoa test is vital: O’Connor

Fiji Rugby Union chief executive John O’Connor has highlighted the importance of Flying Fijians Pacific tests against Tonga and Samoa next year.

O’Connor said the two tests will help Fiji prepare for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

O’Connor said they are anticipating a strong squad from the two teams and says Fiji’s ability will be tested in July next year.

He said the players have been given a good opportunity to embrace the two matches and put out their efforts in the two tests.

“Yes, the two tests against Samoa and Tonga are confirmed. We anticipate two tough teams coming in and playing Fiji. The two tests will tell where Fiji stands in the Pacific region after we played the All Blacks in July.”

“It’s also a good way to prepare ahead of the World Cup in 2023. Both the tests will put us in one direction and it will guide us to 2023. We want to learn from the tests and also take up that challenge. Because it’s been a while since Fiji hasn’t played Tonga and Samoa.”

“Samoa will miss the Northern tour following the due to the COVID-19 concern but we have heard Tonga going. Fiji will also be part of the Autumn test and that is something we are working on at the moment,” O’Connor explained.
