Brothers motivate Bari to play rugby

Fijiana 7s debutant and Savusavu lass Verenaisi Bari revealed that her brothers pushed her to take up rugby as a sport since highscool.
The 20-year-old made her cut into the Fijiana 7s squad for the Malaga 7s but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed her international debut yet she stayed determined and has made it into the HSBC Langford 7s squad.
Speaking exclusively to FijiLive, Bari said getting a spot in the Fijiana 7s squad means a lot to her brothers.
"My brothers are more happy than me for the selection."
"It wasn't easy getting into the main team because I was part of the extended squad since 2019 but due to fitness I was dropped."
"When I was young, I was shy and then suddenly one day they told me that a girls place is not only in the kitchen, but rather get out of the comfort zone and see the outside world."
"My brothers always wanted to play rugby for Fiji but they were frequently dropped from the team and that motivated me also."
Bari said fitness was a challenge for her but she utilised the local 7s competition as a platform to improve on her rugby skills and fitness.
"When I got selected I was told that I have talent but my fitness was a big concern. I had a huge weight and because of that my speed was not there."
"So my brothers trained me at home and then I also participated in the local tournament to reach the fitness level needed in the Fijiana 7s squad."
"It wasn't easy because I had to control my diet but now that I'm seeing the result, I'm really excited for my first tournament."
"For me, I'm eager to score tries in my first tournament and also learn from these girls and the international team," she added.
Fijiana will open their Langford 7s campaign against USA at 4.30am on Sunday.
