Sowakula scores in late flourish

Fiji-born loose forward Pita Gus Sowakula scored a try for the Chiefs in their 27-25 narrow win over the Queensland Reds in Round 11 of Super Rugby Pacific yesterday.
The Reds started with a penalty through flyhalf Lawson Creighton in the opening minute, before the Chiefs responded quickly with two successful penalties from Bryn Gatland only for Creighton to level the points soon after with a second penalty.

Harry Wilson created an impact on the field with his try right under the post with Creighton converting to give the Reds a 13-6 lead.

The Chiefs continued to kept up the fight and a try from Cortez Ratima converted by Gatland saw them level the points up at 13-all at half time.

A yellow card to Red’s Harry Wilson saw Chiefs take full advantage of the overlap and Samisoni Taukei’aho scored a try which Gatland converted.

A missed penalty to the Reds gave them a huge scare but the Chiefs played a more mindful game and a set up pass from Luke Jacobson saw No.8 Pita Gus Sowakula score to put them ahead.

It took some time for the Reds to bounce back with a try from Josh Flook but the crucial conversion failed.

Minutes later, the Chiefs were down with 14-men when substitute Samipeni Finau was shown a direct red card for a marginal high shot on Fraser McReight opened the door for the Reds as Hunter Paisami scored their consolation try and Creighton converted to end the match.
