Suva edges Labasa in Pacific Cup opener

Fiji FACT and Inter District champions Suva edged Battle of the Giants winners Labasa 2-1 in their opening match of the 2022 Pacific Community Cup at Prince Charles Park in Nadi today.

An own goal by young Sailosi Tawake in the opening minute of the match gave Suva the lead.

The Babasiga Lions replied with the equalizer a minute later through midfielder Ashnil Raju whose powerful volley was buried into his own net by goalkeeper Jovilisi Borisi.

The Whites regained the lead in the 11th minute via a spot kick after Samuela Drudru was taken down in a crude challenge inside the Labasa box.

Ni-Vanuatu attacker Azariah Soromon lofted the ball to the right of goalkeeper Atunaisa Naucukidi with his attempt.

Suva led 2-1 at the break and the scores remained unchanged till the final whistle although both teams toiled hard to get more goals.

Suva will face the NZFFI All Stars in their next match at 3.30pm tomorrow while Labasa will come up against champions Lautoka in the final match of the day at 7.15pm.
