COVID-19 should not be an excuse: Bower

Team Fiji Chef de mission Patrick Bower says athletes should stop blaming the COVID-19 pandemic when it comes to domestic competitions and preparation.

Bower says there wasn’t enough quality competition to prepare athletes for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

“COVID 19 cannot be just an excuse as more quality competition needs to be organised for our athletes to be competitive.”

“Yes, there really wasn't any quality competition generated.”

“One of the reasons is because unlike before we do not have the district affiliations or clubs that can provide that quality competition much needed by these Olympic hopefuls,” Bower said.

He also mentioned athletes who are injured or sustain injury after qualifying to the Tokyo Olympics will receive medical attention first.

“We also know that our Olympic hopefuls were nursing injuries in the past and/or sick but these are Olympic hopefuls who should have access to top medical personnel to ensure speedy recovery.”

“Hopefully with the opportunity to seek out more competition overseas, hopefully our athletes can improve before the Olympic Games start,” he added.
