Vakasama replaces Tuwai as Fiji's flag bearer

Team Fiji swimmer Taichi Vakasama who will replace two time Olympian Jerry Tuwai and join Team Fiji's Rugby Womens 7s Rusila Nagasau as the male Flagbearer for the Opening of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC)  said the reason for this change is the outcome of a request by the Rugby Sevens Men’s Management team as part of their preparations for the critical competition which begins on Monday.

FASANOC said the decision was not made lightly but the safety of the team is paramount after details of the Opening Ceremony was shared with all the teams earlier this morning and whilst all protocols will be followed to ensure the safety of all participants, the overall decision was made in keeping in line with their preparations plans.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced in March 2020 the option of having a male and female competitor carrying their country’s flag at the Opening Ceremony.

“We have changed the rules to allow National Olympic Committees to nominate a female and a male athlete to jointly bear their flag during the Opening Ceremony,” said IOC in a press statement.

With this initiative, the IOC is sending another extremely strong message to the world that gender balance is a reality at the Olympic Games.
