South Africa wins Edmonton 7s

South Africa won the inaugural Edmonton 7s at the Commonwealth Stadium today after beating Great Britain 24-12 in the cup final.

The back to back win also handed the Neil Powell coached side the 2021 World Sevens Series title.

An early yellow card to Selvyn Davids allowed Great Britain to score the first try of the match through Captain Robbie Fergusson and Luke Treharne converted for a 7-0 lead.

Muller Du Plessis scoring twice and Captain Siviwe Soyizwap once as South Africa bounced back and led 17-7 at the break.

A penalty to South Africa saw Soyizwapi roll over two Great Britain players and Ronald Brown’s conversion extended their lead to 24-7 early in the second half,

Tom Bowen brought Great Britain back in the game with a try which also was the 99th of his career but the South Africans remained dominant and clung onto their lead till the final whistle.
