Masirewa named in Japanese squad

Fiji-born winger Semisi Masirewa has earned a spot in Japan’s squad to face the Wallabies in their Autumn test match in Oita tomorrow.

Masirewa is part of the 23 member squad which has a number of experienced players who featured for Japan two years ago in the World Cup quarter-finals.

The 28-year-old played for the Force in Super Rugby before moving to play for Japan’s Kintetsu Liners, and then the Sunwolves in 2018.

Jack Cornelsen and Ben Gunter will earn their first Japan Test caps against the Wallabies in Oita on Saturday, while another Australian product Dylan Riley has been named on the bench.

The son of Greg Cornelsen - the former Wallaby who famously bagged four tries against the All Blacks at Eden Park in 1978 - has been named at lock while Gunter will start at blindside flanker.

JAPAN: Semisi Masirewa, Lomano Lemeki, Timothy Lafaele, Ryoto Nakamura, Siosaia Fifita, Rikiya Matsuda, Yutaka Nagare, Kazuki Himeno, Pieter Labuschagne (captain), Ben Gunter, James Moore, Jack Cornelsen, Koo Ji-won, Atsushi Sakate, Keita Inagaki
