More urgency needed in breakdowns: Byrne

Swire Shipping Fijian Drua Coach Mick Byrne wants urgency in breakdowns, especially going up against 12 times Super Rugby champions Crusaders.

Although the Drua came away with a clear 34-19 win against Moana Pasifika last Saturday, Byrne said they needed to tighten the ship after losing easy balls at the ruck.

“What we look on is the players that should be there, and we know who the players are and we will sit down with them to ensure that doesn’t happen this week,” Byrne told FijiLive.

Although the Drua conceded 12 turnovers when on attack, defensively they came out strong with 20 turnovers.

Byrne said it came to the crunch end of games, where players needed to take one extra step.

“We just have to work a little bit harder on those first three or four metres and that is our challenge.

“When we get tired and are playing well, our players just get a little bit weary and that is what we have been working on this year, trying to play that game at pace.”

Byrne added the team was getting better each week but were learning every game.

The Crusaders host the Fijian Drua at 7.05pm at Orangetheory Stadium in Christchurch on Friday night.
