Call for inquiry into death of rugger

Opposition Whip and Rewa Rugby Patron Ro Filipe Tuisawau is calling on the Ministry of Sports to investigate circumstances surrounding the death of Nadroga rugby player Monika Koroiderekelevu .

Tuisawau in a statement said an inquiry needs to be made to ascertain a way forward and avoid future incidents.

“If there is anything we should do now it is to learn from what happened to Monika and to review how we handle and manage safety and injuries in the rugby field,” he said.

“I am calling of the Ministry of Sports to initiate an inquiry into how her case was handled from the injury management on the day, the role of officials, follow up, her continuing to train while injured, the handling by doctors and Ministry of Health, role of the Fiji Rugby Union.”

Tuisawau added that identifying cause and providing solutions is now the primary concern.

“It is not to punish or vilify anyone but It is very important to identify where we failed Monika and to take appropriate measures to ensure that future cases are handled better.”

19-year-old Koroidrekelevu, passed away last Sunday and was laid to rest yesterday, after having been bedridden for weeks after being injured sustained during the ANZ Marama Championship in June.
