Chand's win puts Grammar in contention

Nathanael Arik Allen Chand ensured that his first Gold medal put Suva Grammar School second in the medal tally at the Coca-Cola Games on Friday.
The Lau Matuku native from Kadavu  said it was tough for him to train without his professional trainer Jone Delai who was assisting national sprinter Yeshnil Karan at the Commonwealth Games.
Chand said he wasn’t confident of winning the Gold but said Delai kept pushing him throughout the zone competition and today before he took the field.
"I wasn’t sure if I could pass the zone and also get the Gold for my school."
"Weeks before the zone competition I suffered a hamstring injury and that really lacked my confidence."
"Also my trainer had to go to England. Things got tough for me and at a stage I felt that no Coke Games for me this year. I was really stressed out but one day I received a call from Delai and he motivated me over the call."
"He guided me in the training despite being away and he brought my confidence back."
"I was nervous today. I really wanted him to be here and watch my game. He always tells me to come out of my comfort zone and train at things I lack at."
"Like sometimes I feel fatigue and tired but he is there to push me,” he said.
The 14-year-old also dedicated the win to his father Nigel Chand and mother Janet.
