Japan 7s for local tourney exposure

The Japan men’s rugby 7s team will be a favourite at this weekend’s Duavata Sevens Tournament.

The 18-man squad is already in the country for its final stopover ahead of the World Rugby Sevens Series in Los Angeles.

Duavata Sevens tournament organizer Vetaia Koro said they were honoured to have Japan join them for their first official Sevens tournament.

“We are very grateful to have Japan join the Duavata 7s tournament, and no doubt they will be fan favourite,” Koro said.

“It will also be a great experience for them as they hit it out with some of the best 7s clubs in the country.”

The side is coached by Koichi Umeda and hosts top players such as Fijian-born veteran Kameli Soejima.

Japan is in Pool A  at the Los Angeles 7s with Australia, Spain and Argentina.

The Duavata 7s tournament begins tomorrow at the Ra Sports Complex in Rakiraki.
