Rayasi scores to down Southland

Former All Black 7s player Salesi Rayasi scored a crucial try to secure Auckland's 24-23 win over Southland in the second round of the Bunnings National Provincial Championship at Rugby Park Stadium last night.

The win sees Auckland get their third win after three rounds and go top of the ladder in the Evens Conference.

Auckland looked to blow the game away with a 14-6 lead in the first half.

The Blues scored two tries through number eight Jackson Pugh, converted by skipper Harry Plummer and a penalty.

Southland lost their skipper and locks Josh Bekhuis after the resulting penalty try, but after flyhalf Marty Banks managed two converted penalties.

The Stags had all the momentum and looked to trouble the table leaders with outside centre Isaac Te Tamaki getting the homeside back in to the fight with a try which was converted.

Banks would give convert a penalty on 62 minutes to send them to the front for the first time in the game.

But the north islanders proved too clinical as Plummer converted a penalty before Rayasi dealt the death blow on 66 minutes with Plummer converting.

Reserve halfback Jakob Morrison would score a consolation try in over time for the home side which substitute inside back Greg Dyer converted.
