Sacrifices pay off for Bakaniceva

14-year-old Francis Bakaniceva won the first gold medal for International Secondary School at the 2022 Cola-Cola Games after winning the Sub-Junior boys 100m final.

Bakaniceva, who got interested into athletics through his school inter house in 2019 said coming to the national finals was tough for him.

Bakaniceva said he had to lose weight where he had to follow a strict diet and had to go through several exercises to get in form.

“I came from the US in 2018 and in 2019 I took part in the school athletics."

"Didn’t really show much there because I did not have the fitness in me."

"So the teachers believed in me and they asked if I wanted to be part of the zone meet."

"I got really excited and from there I had to work on my fitness."

"Like when I came from the States, my weigh was a lot and I had to train a lot."

"So I started training with the school athletics team and had to control my diet."

"From there I saw my fitness and body transform and that really helped me in achieving the medal today.

"It was tough but I really wanted to take part in this game."
