Tavailagi breaks 7-year record

Ratu Kadavulevu School Aminiasi Tavailagi has broken a seven-year-old record after claiming gold in the Coca-Cola Games sub-junior boys' long jump at the HFC Bank Stadium today.

The aspiring doctor from Tilivalevu Village in Nadroga said while aiming for gold, he had no intention of breaking a record.

“I was only wanting to win in my grade, when they told me I had broken a record I was surprised,” a humble Tavailagi said.

“I was really surprised, but all the thanks go to my coaches for preparing me well for my events.”

The lanky 14-year-old is eager to return to next year’s game to repeat his performance.

“I am definitely looking forward to coming back again next year, and seeing if I can get another medal as well.”

Tavailagi added that he would now focus on playing in Vodafone Secondary Schools Deans Competition now that the games were finished.

Tavailagi jumped a  distance of 6.03 metres to break the record of 5.84 metres set by Paula Nasara of Natabua High School in 2015.
