Fiji retains Hong Kong 7s title

Fiji successfully retained its title in Hong Kong tonight after convincingly beating South Africa 22-0 in the grand finale at the So Kon Po Stadium in Happy Valley.

The Osea Kolinisau captained side looked hungry and ruthless from the opening whistle and scored two tries through Sevuloni Mocenacagi and Mesulame Kunavula to lead 10-0 at halftime.

Yasawa flyer Kalione Nasoko finished off two more well executed Fijian moves in the second half to seal the important victory- the first tournament win of the 2016/17 World Sevens Series and Fiji’s third straight Hong Kong 7s title win.

Captain Kolinisau said they were determined to win and were expecting a tough final against the Africans.

“I am very humbled and I want to thank the Lord up above for giving us the strength to go through the tournament. We’ve always said that no matter what’s been happening does not change our faith in the Lord and without him we could not have achieved what we have achieved today. South Africa was a good side. We were not focusing on doing it three times , we said we gonna take it as we going to search for our first title of the series and I am glad the boys were fitter and everybody did their job very well,” he said.

“Hong Kong seems like a home away from home and we have watched a lot of idols play here. And there is dream of every young Fijian to wear the white jersey and everyone wants to wear it in Hong Kong.”

He dedicated their win to all children back in Fiji as they celebrated Palm Sunday today.

Nasoko’s superb performance in the final saw him win the HSBC Most Valuable Player of the Final.
