Makoe leads Fijiís campaign

Rewa utility Amani Makoe will lead the Vodafone Fiji side against New Caledonia in their dead rubber World Cup qualifier at Churchill Park today.

The 26-year-old who also captained the national side in their 1-0 win over the Solomon Islands in the second international friendly last month was picked ahead of Benaminio Mateinaqara and New Zealand based Roy Krishna.

The selection is based on consistency in training and camp and the former Fiji U20 was rated above Krishna and Mateinaqara as the pair did not feature in the last match. Mateinaqara rejoined camp last week following the birth of his son while Krishna marched into camp on Monday.

Coach Christophe Gamel is expected to retain the core of the team that defeated the Solomon Islands in Lautoka with Krishna, Samuela Kautoga and Mateinaqara likely to be the only changes.

Fiji faces New Caledonia at 4pm and will travel to Noumea to play the second leg of the qualifier on Sunday.

Likely Fiji lineup- Benaminio Mateinaqara, Kolinio Sivoki, Remueru Tekiate, Samuela Kautoga, Kavaia Rawaqa, Epeli Saukuru, Amani Makoe, Dave Radrigai, Christopher Wasasala, Roy Krishna, Setareki Hughes.
