We will prepare locally for Olympics: Baber

Fiji 7s head coach Gareth Baber says their gold medal defence campaign for the Olympic Games will entirely centre around local tournaments since the World Sevens Series will not commence until October.

He said while it is pleasing to hear the confirmation of the World 7s Series schedule, it is a little sad the tournaments will commence after the Olympics.

“It’s nice to hear that there’s some confirmation of tournaments sort of the back end of the 2021. Fiji is particularly looking forward to that with the likes of Singapore and Hong Kong possibly Vancouver and London as well.”

“It’s good to see some action be coming forth in the likes of October and November later this year.”

“Unfortunately it does not give us opportunity prior to the Olympics so the plans that we have, we are putting into place and have moved, changed and strategized continuingly.”

“We continue to work with the Super 7s Series and the other domestic tournament that has been held in Fiji and we continue to play there.”

“That sort of look at October and November of next year running into the new season and into 2022 when you have commonwealth games and rugby world cup as well," he added.
