FRU eyes 5 test matches for Drua

The Fijian Drua is aiming to at least play five test matches before making its debut in Super Rugby next season.

Fiji Rugby chief executive John O’Connor said  they are hoping for the COVID-19 pandemic to settle down so that team can gain its much needed match exposure before taking on the tougher opponents in Super Rugby.

“Yes, there are plans for Drua and we want to have some test matches played at home so that we are well prepared before they take the field for the Super Rugby. We know the global pandemic is affecting everybody but that does not deter the Drua to prepare at home.”

“We have to bring in a company and upgrade from the bottom so that we have all the things that are needed. The excitement is high but for now we are looking at various ways where we could host some matches at home.”

“This actually will give us a good opportunity to develop our players and also we got some interest from our overseas based players whose contracts have ended or is about to end. All this is being taken into consideration as we build a strong team for 2022.”

O’Connor also mentioned that FRU is working closely with New Zealand Rugby while nine months remain for Drua to prepare for 2022.

“Yes, we need to understand that early preparation is necessary especially when it’s our first time in Super Rugby and we might be hosting at least five Super rugby games in Suva and Lautoka. A lot is required but we are arranging and sorting things out with our equity partners New Zealand rugby.”

“Time is something that we need to consider utmost because with just nine months, we have a lot of incomplete work. We have to set up a good company at the earliest and bring in certified coaches who can lead Drua which again will require time and effort,"  he added.
