We've not endorsed any fundraising drives: FRU

The Fiji Rugby Union has clarified that it has not approved or endorsed any fundraising activities for the Fijian and Fijiana 7s teams online in particular through social media.

FRU chief executive John O'Connor in a statement said it has been brought to their attention that a few entities, individuals and social clubs have started circulating and promoting fundraising activities.

He said none of these initiatives have been approved or endorsed by Team Fiji or Fiji Rugby.

"Fiji Rugby has also determined that none of these initiatives have applied for relevant fundraising permits from relevant Government agencies nor sort approval from the Team Fiji or Fiji Rugby."

"We have had to initiate action after we had received concerns and complaints from the management of the team that they are not aware of such initiatives nor have been consulted on any of the initiatives."

He said while FRU appreciates the kind gesture and support for the 7s teams, it wishes to clarify that all public fundraising initiatives must comply with all relevant laws including permits, tax clearance and relevant sanctions by the Team Fiji or Fiji Rugby with transparent processes.

“We advise all Fiji Rugby fans and stakeholders to verify any proposals and ensure they do their due diligence before they contribute to such initiatives."

O'Connor added that the Fiji men's 7s team is fit and healthy and is in their 5th day in quarantine while the Fijiana 7s team is still in Japan awaiting departure on 10 August.
