Fiji-born winger Mosese Dawai scored the opening try for Waikato as they secured a 43-37 comeback victory over Wellington in Round 2 of NPC on Sunday.
Waikato took the early lead through Dawai but Wellington responded quickly via Pepesana Patafilo.
With a strong midfield, Wellington took advantage of every opportunity and a break by second five-eighths Peter Umaga-Jensen gave Patafilo his second try.
After flanker Du'Plessis Kirifi scored, the Wellington backs cashed in on a turnover as first five-eighths Ruben Love showed blistering pace to clear out downfield.
Minutes later, Centre Julian Savea scored to create a 27-8 gap.
Then Wellington went to the break on a 34-8 lead after an Umaga-Jensen intercept.
A Savea sin-binning for a dangerous tackle saw Waikato taking advantage with back to back tries from Jack Lam and moments later hooker Oliver Norris also scored.
Wellington's only second half points came from a penalty goal.
Waikato halfback Cortez Ratima scored while Flanker Liam Messam went over from a maul, and there was only one point in it.
A superb comeback for Waikato came from Winger Liam Coombes-Fabling scored the match winner.
