End stigma women in rugby

Close families and friends had a feast today to celebrate the achievement of Aloesi Nakoci after she won bronze medal for the Fijiana team at the Tokyo Olympic on Thursday.

Valkyries Women Rugby Club treasurer Emma Lynda Talei said the accomplishment was not an easy feat as she had to put in the hard yards in training.

Talei said the club knew that the Ra lad would go far in her rugby career as she was dedicated, sacrifice and balanced her personal life and family time with her rugby commitments.

“The club is getting so much attention and respect because of her hardworking. We will never forget July 30 when the girl won bronze,” she said.

“She has come a long way. Been through a lot in terms of moving here and there just to be where she is today. The club is really proud of her achievements.

“She doesn't only represent Valkyries Women's Rugby Club but also Tailevu Women's 15s Rugby Team,” she said.

She hopes the stigma of women playing rugby will end after they managed to win bronze at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

“In my perspective, I do hope in a big way. What the girls showed in Japan was not only for the country, it's also for all the women, young girl’s dream of playing rugby in this country.

"The idea to be recognised equally in the playing field of rugby. A bronze medal win for Aloesi, for me, is a gold medal win for all women in rugby in this country.”
