Nakoci rated top six at Olympics

Fijiana 7s rep and 2020 Tokyo Olympics women’s 7s Bronze medalist Alowesi Nakoci has been rated amongst the top six female players of the Olympics by World Rugby.

Nakoci was a replacement in Fiji’s opening two matches at Tokyo Stadium, scored a try on her first Olympic start, against Brazil, and became one of the bronze medallists’ most important performers thereafter.

The Ra lass set the tone for the impressive 14-12 defeat of the defending champions in the medal quarter-finals as she strode through a gap in the Australian defence to score the opening try of the match.

Great Britain weren’t able to contain the tall and skilful back in the bronze medal match and Nakoci scored twice, the second a breakaway effort that started inside her own 22.

Minutes earlier she had put in a try-saving tackle on Joyce, a skill she may well have mastered as a full-back in 15s. In her last appearance in test rugby, Nakoci scored a brace of tries to help Fijiana beat Samoa 41-13 and qualify for a first Rugby World Cup.

According to World Rugby, she was one of the best players to see in action and could impress the fans again at the World Rugby Sevens Series, Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022 and the Commonwealth Games are all set to take place in the next year.

World Rugby believes the woman might also have sights set on a trip to New Zealand for Rugby World Cup 2021, which is now being played in 2022.

the other five players rated best are Caroline Drouin of France, Stacey Fluhler of New Zealand, Jasmine Joyce of Great Britain/Wales, Kris Thomas of USA and Portia Woodman of New Zealand.
