Tokyo Olympics and Fiji 7s Gold winning coach Gareth Baber have revealed that past losses were their motivation to defend the Gold at the Olympics.
Baber speaking to Fiji Rugby media reflected on Fiji’s loss at the 2019 and 2020 series.
He said the combination between the senior and young players brought in more winning ideas to the team.
“The motivation for that season was the loss of the previous season. We were in a position where we came so close but hadn’t delivered what we needed to deliver." Baber said.
"Obviously time was getting closer to the Olympics as well. So we had to squeeze in the immediate performances. With the need to stay on your plan of what was coming for the Olympics.”
“We’ve got a lot right in the previous season but we just hadn’t had that consistency in some of the tournaments where we hadn’t really been at our top level.
It again coincided with potentially Paula Dranisikula captaining the side and how he performed. Players with the likes of Jerry Tuwai stepping up also the likes of the younger players who came in and brought in energy.” he said.
“The team was gelling well on and off the field and the momentum surged"
Tuwai was doing some of the best stuff for us and he was right at the top of his games. The group was really moving when Jerry was given time in the game with his stepping play,” Baber said.
