Sivan eyes national jumper

Navua goalkeeper Jayshneel Krishan Sivan turned 21 today and has set his focus to don the national team jersey in the coming years.

Sivan joined Navua earlier this year following his impressive performance while studying at Vashist Muni College.

The 21-year-old told FijiLive that he wants to be part of the national football team and has started all the hard work ahead.

When asked why he chose to be a goalkeeper Sivan said it was a motivation from his high school teachers.

“I started my football career from the under 10 Vashist Muni Primary school. At youth level I used to play every position but my teacher Mr Sanjesh Singh told me that I have good goalkeeping skills so that encouraged me to play keeper.”

“At first I found it difficult, especially during the school competitions. But as I entered high school we met senior students and teachers who helped me out.”

The Naitata Navua led is currently a Civil Engineering Student at the University of the South Pacific and is determined to take part in a local tournament.

“I just started playing and the starting is always difficult but I’m taking all this as a challenge. I have set my target and that is to play for Fiji at international tournament. I know it’s a long mile but I believe that early preparation is the best cure for any hurdles in life.”

“My biggest experience so far was the 1-nil win against Ba in the Digicel Premier League. I always had a dream to play against big local teams which came true. I did my best and also learnt a lot from that game. Ba came out strong and we defeated them after 11 years. It was a big lesson for me.”

“When I look back at the preparation phase, we did a lot of hard work. We did training in the morning and evening daily. The coach and officials were very helpful and they had set up a good game plan which the players executed well.”

Sivan, who is a big fan of a Portuguese professional footballer Cristiano Ronaldo also highlighted that he is determined to improve his goal keeping skills.

“I know that I still have some areas to work on because coach always says there is no room for errors and tries to learn from your mistakes.  I want to work on my goal saving skills and try to avoid goals as much as I can. My height allows me to catch the ball really quickly.”

“I want to learn more on game controlling and diving skills. The coach always says that as a keeper I have to look out at all the positions because the ball can be shot from any angle. The wide ground and keeping eyes on who has the ball is also something I’m trying to grasp.”

“Sometimes I fail to dive and catch the long balls shot and that’s something I’m working on during my personal training at home. I’m trying to learn through YouTube tutorials and also by reflecting on my past games.”

The young southerner, who is related to experienced player Shivam Nathan, acknowledged his parents and all the Navua fans that have been supportive towards him.
