Derenalagi can lead Flying Fijians: Raiwalui

Fiji Rugby Union General Manager High Performance and former Flying Fijians Captain Simon Raiwalui says newly signed Fijian Drua forward and Olympic gold medalist Ratu Meli Derenalagi has the qualities to lead the nation.

The 23-year-old former Fiji 7s Captain is amongst five players that were announced as latest signings for Fijian Drua today for next season's Super Rugby Pacific season.

“All the players announced so far have leadership qualities. I think we have mentioned Meli Derenalagi-he has already captained the 7s team. If his development keeps going than I see him as a future Flying Fijians captain. He has the qualities," said Raiwalui.

Meanwhile, Drua interim chief executive Brian Thorburn said the team Captain will be chosen after full three months of training which will commence in November.

Thorburn said there is a criteria which the Captain will have to meet in order to lead the club in its inaugural season.

“We will have to look at the players both on and off the field for the three months when assembling a team. Essentially at the beginning of November to give a solid three months of training period and I suspect the coaching team will not make a decision on their captain growing closer to the rugby season.”

“A criteria in selecting players is their leadership capacity. Ratu Meli has been a captain in the Fiji 7s team so he has that background and experience. But it's going to be up on the coaching team to make their assessment after the next three months,” he added.
