7s reps in extended Drua squad

Some Fiji 7s players including a few that won gold medal at the recent Tokyo Olympics are in the 38-member Fijian Drua extended squad for next year's Super Rugby Pacific.

Fiji Rugby Union chief executive John O'Connor while revealing this said these players should get a chance to further excel and make a name for themselves in Super Rugby.

“We have players from the Fiji 7s team who have given their application to join Drua. We won’t be naming those players now but we have got some positive remarks from them. Some players were part of the Olympics win while some could not make the team to Tokyo but were part of the squad and played in local tournaments."

“What we want to see in a player is quality and performance. We want to sail a team of players who can compete against high level of teams in Super Rugby. Our hard work in getting the franchise license was not easy and we want to build a team which is not easy to beat.”

“The Drua has opened up opportunities for other young players and also experienced players to give their best on the world stage. The competition itself will be a testimonial where the Drua will stand against New Zealand Rugby and Rugby Australia franchises,” he said.

O’Connor also mentioned that the full Fijian Drua squad will be named early in October before the team flies out to Australia to prepare for the competition.
