Maqala was the surprise package: Tuivuaka

Fiji 7s forward and Olympic gold medalist Asaeli Tuivuaka says youngster Sireli Maqala was the surprise package and a real stand-out performer in the Oceania 7s and the Tokyo Games.

Tuivuaka said despite being the 13th player, Maqala gave his best and stunned everyone at the Oceania 7s in Townsville and continued his impressive performance in Japan.

He said the former Ratu Kadavulevu School student has a long way to go in his rugby career and he hopes to see him represent Fiji again at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

“Maqala impressed me because a young player like him is very hard to find. He makes his own way on the field and communicates well with everyone. His form is very good, especially at the age of 21. He has got a tough physicality and he has speed in him.”

“Whenever he had the ball with him, he ran for a try and one thing that really impressed me is his team bonding. He is one of the funny guys in the team but at serious moments he is able to give his best and plays the rugby that we hardly see coming from young players.”

“He has got a lot of talent hidden in him and some of which we saw in Australia against New Zealand and against Great Britain at Tokyo. I believe with his current form, hard work and dedication, Maqala can make it to the Paris Olympics. Players like him are difficult to find,” Tuivuaka added.
