Last leg of Series before Dubai 7s: FRU

Fiji Rugby Union chief executive John O’Connor has confirmed that the last leg of the Super Sevens Series will take place two weeks ahead of the Dubai 7s.

O’Connor said playing the last leg two weeks prior means the national team will feel the atmosphere of playing at an international tournament and local players will gain more experience.

He said the domestic competition will also allow national coach Gareth Baber to select his best players and finalise the main team.

“The new leg of the sevens series will start off next month and the domestic tournament will help the players in adjusting to the international rugby atmosphere.  Rugby has been on hold for nearly sevens months in Fiji apart from the Fiji 7s team training.”

“As the Olympic gold winning nation we have to prepare a solid team. We want to host the last leg so that teams come in and play and prepare from local tournaments. It’s a good way we can look out for new players and also allow our senior players to train before the coach finalises the national team.”
