Naholo scores as Taranaki win NPC

Crusaders bound Kini Naholo scored a try for Taranaki as they defeated Otago by 32-19 to win the Bunnings NPC title yesterday in New Zealand.

Taranaki made a good start in the final as Fijian No.8 PitaGus Sowakula showed his classic ball in hand to set up a pass to prop Jared Profitt who scored in the corner and Stephen Perofeta converted.

Otago responded immediately through lock Josh Hill who caught Perofeta’s rebounding ball to score and Josh Ioane converted.

Sowakula gave winger Naholo the ball with room to move and ran hard into the tackle, passing out allowing Daniel Waite to run down the side line to score.

Otago first five-eighth Josh Ioane used momentum created by No8 Christian Leo-Wille's strong burst and flicked the ball inside where winger Vilimoni Koroi scored.

Just before halftime, Taranaki capitalised as Naholo ran from the blindside wing moving the ball right to lock Mickey Wooliams to score.

Taranaki led by 22-12 at the break.

First five-eighth Jayson Potroz kicked ahead and it was Naholo who was unchallenged to sprint to the line and touch down.

Minutes after Potroz was sin-binned for a professional foul, Otago packed a scrum in front of the posts and saw Ioane charged onto the ball and powered his way over the line and converted.
