Qereqeru ready for 7s debut

23-year-old Panapasa Qeruqeru is itching to run onto the field and make his 7s debut for Fiji in the Dubai 7s.

In just his first season of competitive rugby, the Emuri villager from Nadroga became the talk of the town after scoring a brace of tries for the Stallions in the 25-17 win over champions Suva in the Skipper Cup in April.

From there, the journey has been a smooth sail for the former footballer.

Although the lockdown affected his rugby training and performance, the youngster kept himself occupied by cutting sugarcane in the interior of Ba and earning a living for himself and his family.

He could not believe his luck when he was called up in the national 7s squad to prepare for the opening leg of the World 7s Series.

“At first I didn’t know how to reply or react to that phone call but deep down inside, I was emotionally overwhelmed knowing that this is a breakthrough for me and my family,” Qeruqeru told FRU Media.

“I know I haven’t proven myself much in local 7s tournaments and I believe this is where I will learn to grow in the sport of rugby.

“There’s a competition in the team and I will have to prove myself to the coaches that I can be as good as those that have been playing 7s in local and international tournaments.

“Apart from playing soccer in school, all that I ever knew was cutting sugarcane and farming but when I started playing rugby, I then saw that I have many opportunities ahead of me, and I thank the Almighty that he has opened a door for me,” he added.
